Grigg-Gault Brings the Heat in the USA

Written by DavidP - Thu, 30 Jul 2015 19:40:47 +0000

The heat was on for series leader Ethan Grigg-Gault and the rest of the competitors in the latest round of the iRacing V8Supercar Series held at Sebring International Raceway in sultry central Florida. Qualifying Hot and humid weather made conditions very uncomfortable for the 24 sim racers who lined up for the main SOF qualifying at Sebring.  The 5.9 km (3.7 mile) layout of concrete and asphalt presented challenges to the strong field throughout the 12 minute session.  With the extended lap times, drivers had limited opportunities to get that one ‘hot lap’ in to be sure that the time counted was indicative of their performance. Ian Ford, second in the championship and racing for Evolution Racing Australia in the Holden Commodore, again showed he’s the one lap master of [...]

Max Verstappen Joins Team Redline

Written by DavidP - Thu, 30 Jul 2015 16:33:47 +0000

Scuderia Toro Rosso Formula One driver Max Verstappen has joined the Team Redline sim racing team.  Verstappen joins Team Redline’s already potent lineup that includes five time iRacing World Championship Grand Prix Series champion Greger Huttu, Alexsi Uusi Jaakola (a two time winner in the 2015 iRacing World Championship Grand Prix Series) and former iRacing Pro Series champion Richie Stanaway who is currently competing in the FIA World Endurance Championship with Aston Martin Racing and the GP2 Series with Status Grand Prix. The inclusion of world-class “real world” racing talents like Stanaway and Verstappen on one of the world’s top sim racing teams underlines the sport’s growing presence in the mainstream motorsports scene. “I’m happy and honoured to have Max onboard at Team Redline!” said team manager Atze Kerkhof, a [...]

Daniel Roeper’s the Field!

Written by DavidP - Thu, 30 Jul 2015 13:44:36 +0000

Daniel Roeper led 85 of 125 laps in the second round of the Lionheart IndyCar Series presented by Overdrive Graphics at Milwaukee to take the victory in the No Name Racing 125 at Milwaukee. Perhaps the surprise finish of the night, Team #nailedit’s Ian Adams finished second ahead of practice race winner, Jake Wright from No Name Racing. The night’s festivities began with the Last Chance Qualifier. The difference between making the race this week was just .004s. For the second week in a row, Jake Wright paced the LCQ field, with Daniel Roeper coming in second. Other drivers to advance included: James Krahula, Jesse Fowler, Terry Matthiensen, Allen Boes, Sam Adams, Bradley Walters, Tommy Rhyne, Ricky Hardin, Ryan Lowe, Michel de Jonge, and Chuck Eisenbarth. Drivers who failed to [...]

Ottinger Comes on Late to Win Indy

Written by DavidP - Wed, 29 Jul 2015 19:10:50 +0000

Nick Ottinger of Gale Force Racing scored his first victory of the 2015 NASCAR PEAK Antifreeze Series Powered by iRacing at Indianapolis Motor Speedway after a tense late-race battle with Slip Angle Motorsports’ Ray Alfalla and The TEAM’s Kenny Humpe. The race came down to a restart with three laps to go with Humpe in the lead, Alfalla alongside and Ottinger behind in third. The race looked like it would go to whoever on the front row restarted the best but that all changed when Humpe and Alfalla made contact coming off Turn Two after the green. The contact sent Alfalla into a slide and while the two-time series champion made a wonderful save, the loss of momentum put him out of contention for the win. When Alfalla was sliding [...]

Tour Mods Battle at Lucas Oil Raceway

Written by DavidP - Tue, 28 Jul 2015 21:20:43 +0000

The sixth week of the NASCAR iRacing Tour Modified Series brought the sim racers to Lucas Oil Raceway and marked the half way point in the season for the modifieds.  A 19 car field would take the green, with the Untamed Motorsports duo of Chris Forster (pole) and Jerold John on the front row.  In fact. Untamed Motorsports swept the top five starting spots with Keith Jeffery, Rick Webster and Kyle Odaynik occupying places three, four and five on the grid, respectively. The opening laps were intense as the track’s wide surface enabled wheel-to-wheel sim racing throughout the field.   The first eight laps went green before Wicked Autosports teammates Seth DeMerchant and Christian Pedersen made contact as Pedersen got loose and slid into DeMerchant.  With nowhere to go and little [...]

Behind the Scenes: The NASCAR Peak Antifreeze Series powered by iRacing.com – The Oval Office

Written by Matt Holden - Tue, 28 Jul 2015 21:15:32 +0000

Being a participant in the NASCAR PEAK Antifreeze Series comes with its own small amount of fame.  Nick Ottinger gets asked questions all the time like, “Who paints your car?”, “What wheel/pedals do you use?”, and “Do you really have a ponytail?”  Peter Fisher and I, however, see a much smaller range of inquiries.  Aside from Peter’s weekly “Can you call the pace car?”, the question I’ve been asked most often is “What are you looking at during a race?”  There are a lot of people who are curious about what goes on, and that’s what we’ll look at, but first here’s the answer to the ponytail question: The evolution of “crew members” in sim racing has exploded over the past few years.  I remember when iRacing first opened to [...]

Hollyday Runs Circles Around Modifieds at Oxford

Written by DavidP - Tue, 28 Jul 2015 14:40:48 +0000

Week 6 of the NASCAR iRacing.com SK Modifieds Series brought the sim racers to Oxford Speedway, known to iRacers as simply “The circle.” Marking-in at  3/8 mile, Oxford is a flat track . . . with a twist.  The track’s circular shape makes it rare for sim racers to run full throttle for a full lap; rather, the trick to mastering Oxford is to set-up your car to hug the curbs in the corners. This week’s finale Monday night would see some of iRacing’s biggest stars take to the track in a 2445 strength of field.  Ryan Gavel qualified on pole with Matt Bontempi to his immediate right in second place. When the pace car headed to pit lane, Gavel got a great jump and started pulling Bontempi immediately.  Within [...]

Get to Know: Dexter Castro

Written by DavidP - Mon, 27 Jul 2015 18:19:31 +0000

iRacer Dexter Castro celebrates his four year anniversary on iRacing in a couple days and in that time, he has accomplished . . . well, a lot of things on and off the sim. Not even being diagnosed with high-functioning Asperger’s Syndrome at age 12 has stopped him from his living life and from tearing-up the virtual track. The 20 year old has nearly 140 career victories in 666 oval starts, and has raced to victory lane in eight official races on road courses. In addition, Castro (who hails from “the land of the mosquito-bird” aka Maine) has an IndyCar division championship on his very long iRacing resume. Learn more about Dexter in this week’s edition of Get to Know… Q:    What attracted you to racing in the first place? [...]

From A Dig Motorsports’ “Tough Trucks” – Beating the Wicked Hot Heat in Loudon

Written by DavidP - Mon, 27 Jul 2015 14:01:48 +0000

A strong breeze rolls off the sea.  Curling waves thunderously pummel the hard-packed sands below.  Seagulls effortlessly hover within the vortex created above; the breeze begins moving inland.  Over the course of the next thirty miles, the breeze dances with tree limbs, gently tickles the petals of the abundant purple lilacs, and provides relief to the animals.  It’s an unusually hot day in “The Granite State.” and thousands of sun-drenched fans sitting at Loudon’s New Hampshire Motor Speedway are also in need of relief.  As the breeze finally greets the giant, concrete-pillared grandstands, the once gentle breeze is now nothing more than a whisper, but it’s enough.  Enough to rejuvenate countless NASCAR fans as they wipe away the sweat from their brows, flip open the top of the cooler, crack [...]

PR1/Mathiasen Prototype wins Lime Rock’s Northeast Grand Prix

Written by Dave Moulthrop - Sun, 26 Jul 2015 00:03:42 +0000

By Dave Moulthrop  ( Lakeville, CT) Mike Kimber-Smith and teammate Mike Guasch celebrated the return of Prototype racing to Lime Rock Park after a one year absence by winning their third Tudor PC Challange race of the season by a 8.304 second margin, but that was hardly the story.  The first 65 laps of the 2 hr. 40 min. timed  event were dominated my fastest qualifier Stephen Simpsom in the JDC/ Miller Motorsports Prototype as he lapped one competitor after another with only a few of the PC Challange cars on the same lap when he made his first scheduled pit stop. Then second place Conor Daly took the lead for a brief three laps before Simpson reclaimed it. His time at the point was short lived when the car [...]
