IndyCar Reality Check: Indianapolis 500

Written by DavidP - Wed, 27 May 2015 20:36:52 +0000

Now that the 99th Indianapolis 500 is in the books — and Juan Pablo Montoya and Roger Penske are divying-up the $2,449,055 winner’s share of the purse –  iRacers can set their sights on this weekend’s iRacing Indy 500. And while getting Indy 500 setup advice from race engineers is nearly impossible, I was able to talk with a number of IndyCar drivers to get their advice on how to manage the car as well as themselves over the course of 500 miles (real and/or virtual) at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Townsend Bell, #24 The Robert Graham Special “If you see Townsend Bell logged in and participating, make sure that you realize that’s my 11 year old son on my account and that I take zero responsibility, nor do I [...]

What Does the End of Week 12 Mean in the NASCAR iRacing Series?

Written by DavidP - Wed, 27 May 2015 13:57:30 +0000

Short answer?  It means we have completed one third of the season, and run the Daytona 500 and the longest sim race of the season, the Coke 600. If my math holds up we have been scheduled to run 3,201 miles over 2,247 laps. Google Maps tells me that’s the number of miles covered by a drive from Los Angeles to Bangor, Maine; a cross country trip that would take 47 hours and cross 15 states, eight of which I have visited. What makes the first third of the season so very different from the second third of the season? What makes the first third of the season so very different from the second third of the season? This is best answered by starting with which of the dozen races [...]

Star Mazda Reality Check: Lucas Oil Raceway

Written by DavidP - Tue, 26 May 2015 18:04:24 +0000

One of only two oval tracks on the Pro Mazda schedule, Lucas Oil Raceway combines short track oval racing with the excitement of Indianapolis, especially in May. Located about 20 minutes from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Lucas Oil Raceway (formerly Indianapolis Raceway Park) features an 11/16ths mile oval with a modest 12 degrees of banking. 2015 marks 70 years of The Night Before the 500, which as of this year is now The Day Before the 500 and featured racing by the USF2000, Pro Mazda, and USAC Silver Crown cars. This article is designed primarily to help iRacers tune the Star Mazda and build setups for Lucas Oil Raceway along with some tips for navigating the track (Pro Tip: Lots of left turns) While the Star Mazda is a road [...]

So Near Yet So Far

Written by DavidP - Tue, 26 May 2015 17:49:57 +0000

NASCAR iRacing Seres Open  – Week 12: 400 Laps at Charlotte Motor Speedway This is one of the races I look forward to more than most. The reasons are many, but the long green flag runs and pitting under green as well as the raw tactics of the long race always get me pumped. How hard does one push in the first 100 laps or even in the first half of the race? Do you short pit between  Lap 345 and Lap 350 knowing you’re on new tires early in the run with the Lucky Dawg should you get picked-off by a yellow? Do you stay out if a run goes short to hold lapped carw back? All of this runs through your head as the race winds down. Things [...]

The Chicane of Many Moves

Written by camstark - Tue, 26 May 2015 13:36:45 +0000

Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve, Montreal, Canada; the circuit that week 10 of the iRacing Grand Prix Series will be tackling. The drivers had 42 laps awaiting them where concentration needed to be incredibly high. With the concrete walls in close proximity of each of the 13 turns, over the 4.361km distance, a small misjudgement could prove costly and, ultimately, lead to a retirement.  Quickly. GTRos’ Alvaro Ramiro took pole position ahead of the man who has been on a late season charge: Mack Bakkum. Only .004s separated their qualifying times, and if this followed in to the race it was going to be a closely-fought contest. On the other hand, for some sim racers further back in the grid their only contest would be with the wall . . . Vincenzo Amico [...]

Apex Racing UK’s second charity race: Diabetes UK 3 hour Enduro!

Written by camstark - Sat, 23 May 2015 20:19:24 +0000

On June 13th 2015, starting at 13:00 GMT Apex Racing UK will be hosting their second charity event on iRacing’s service. Last year saw an incredibly successful charity event at Spa Francorchamps (over £1000 raised overall!) where people took part in a 2.4 hour event by donating towards the chosen cause of Cancer Research UK. This year’s event will be similar to last year’s, although the charity of choice this time is Diabetes UK. Now iRacing have the team feature at our disposal it will be a team event (although you can race solo if you wish) around the Monza Combined Circuit using GT3 vehicles in a 3 hour race. As said already, the charity race will begin at 13:00 GMT, in a hope that it will be easily accessible for [...]

Jason Oltmanns’ single car operation became the first team to take multiple Feature Race wins on the 2015 Racing Series Season 4 campaign, with his first career win at the World Center of Racing. Oltmanns parked his #51 Best Buy Ford Fusion in Gatorade Victory Lane in Race 9 of the season, after qualifying into the A-Main through his respective Heat Race and via an eighth place finish in the Dash For Cash. The #51 started on the outside of Row 4 for the 40 lap main event which was shown LIVE on LSRTV. Before the green flag dropped on the A Main Feature, the remaining drivers who had been unable to qualify in through the preliminaries (p12 <) had to qualify in through the B-Main event, which was [...]

Grigg-Gault Wins Sebring Thriller

Written by Paul Slavonik - Fri, 22 May 2015 08:00:08 +0000

Sebring International Raceway is one of the oldest and most historic race tracks still in existence in the United States. A former training base during World War II for the U.S. Army Air Corp, Sebring has been continuously operating since 1950 and is home to the world famous 12 Hours of Sebring. Although the 65-year old track plays host to several categories of motorsports including the FIA World Endurance Championship, International Le Mans Cup and, more recently, the TUDOR United SportsCar Championship, Sebring’s virtual counterpart was home to the V8 Supercars Americas Series for Week 9 of the second season of 2015. The Starting Grid As the pre-race qualifying session got underway, 4 Motorsport driver and former V8 Supercars champion, Mitchell McLeod, put in a fast lap which [...]

New face, New rival? Storm Dominates Okayama

Written by camstark - Thu, 21 May 2015 19:53:20 +0000

After a one week sabbatical for many drivers in the iRacing Pro Mazda Series, the road courses returned for Week 9 at Japan’s Okayama International Circuit. The track features 11 corners over its 3.703km course. Much to my surprise we had a totally new front row! It featured none of the common iRacing Pro Mazda names that we’ve been accustomed to throughout the season; although it was incredibly tight based on the top three positions’ times – all separated by less than a tenth. Michael Storm took pole position with a 1.26.438, whilst Wojciech Rabsztyn joined him on the front row, only .76s slower. Wyatt Gooden was a place further back, but had his work cut out to make his way to the head of field based on the pace [...]
